Local dentist hosts Good Deed essay contest

When the opportunity arose to compete in an essay contest at his school, 12-year-old Gurveer Singh jumped at the chance to share his stories.

One story the I.S. 93 student told was about the time he helped an elderly woman that fell in the snow across the street from his house.

“There was this very elderly person and she couldn’t get up from the ground across the street from me, so I was in the window watching the snow and I saw her,” Singh explained. “I ran out with my coat and slippers and I took her to the hospital.”

He also wrote about the time he took a trip he took with his family to India and met a young boy begging for food on the street.

“I bought him food and took care of him, and I also gave him a little bit of money to take care of himself,” Singh said. “I just don’t like seeing people in poverty.”

Singh’s ELL teacher Diana Rivera first got involved in the essay contest after a regular checkup at Grand Smile Dental, located at 69-77 Grand Avenue in Maspeth, earlier this year.

“I offered it to my students in all three classes,” Rivera said. “He’s a good writer so I’m happy he decided to take the opportunity to do this,” she said.

Dentist Alexandra Khaimov hosted the contest in order to engage the community.

“I’m trying to teach our youngsters to do more and have respect for other people and help out more,” Khaimov said. “I want them to pay attention to other people and help out as much as possible.”

The Maspeth dentist presented Singh with a Kindle Fire for his essays in order to inspire him to continue reading and learning and better his own future.

“I am not doing this because I am a dentist,” she explained. “I am doing this because I am a mom and I am teaching my kids to be good. I also see how kids lately are so careless and I would like to reach out to other parents and teachers to raise a better community.”

2014 is over and so is the Good Deed Contest Dr. Khaimov and staff organized.

Dr. Khaimov received many essays full of wonderful good deeds local kids did. It was a hard decision, but the winner is 12-year-old Gurveer Singh, I.S. 93 student. Below are some of the good deeds Gurveer did:

“There was this very elderly person and she couldn’t get up from the ground across the street from me, so I was in the window watching the snow and I saw her,” Singh explained. “I ran out with my coat and slippers and I took her to the hospital.”

He also wrote about the time he took a trip he took with his family to India and met a young boy begging for food on the street.

“I bought him food and took care of him, and I also gave him a little bit of money to take care of himself,” Singh said. “I just don’t like seeing people in poverty.”

“I am not doing this because I am a dentist,” she explained. “I am doing this because I am a mom and I am teaching my kids to be good. I also see how kids lately are so careless and I would like to reach out to other parents and teachers to raise a better community.”

Maspeth Dentist Keeps Her Community Warm and Keeps Patients Healthy

Khaimov_FB_Ad_CoatDrive_V2 copy

Maspeth dentist Dr. Alexandra Khaimov is mobilizing New York residents to come together in an effort to ensure that everyone keeps warm this winter. The demand for warm coats during the winter season is high, and many less fortunate individuals cannot afford them.

According to Dr. Khaimov, the combined effort of the community will make it easy to meet the need for warm coats among the less fortunate. She is therefore inviting locals to participate in a Holiday Coat Drive by collecting clean, gently used warm coats, scarves, gloves and hats.

The coat drive allows families and individuals make a difference in the lives of their neighbors by passing along the coats and jackets they no longer need. Clean, gently used coats and winter accessories can be dropped off at her dental office (69-77 Grand Ave, Maspeth, NY 11378).

Individuals that participate in the coat drive will be rewarded with $50 off on any dental service they receive at Grand Smile Dental. As such, locals get to help the needy while improving their own dental health.

The items collected during the drive will be donated to the PSA II Police Department and Resident Association NYC Housing Authority to help those in need.

“Many of our neighbors need our help, and while a new winter coat may not seem like much, it could mean remaining healthy through the cold season for someone who cannot afford one. I can’t think of a simpler way to play our part in the community this holiday season,” said Dr. Khaimov.

Dr. Khaimov is passionate about improving the lives of those in her community, and this is not the first Holiday Coat Drive that she has organized. She has also mobilized the community in other charitable activities in the past, including food drives and organ donation registration.

Dr. Khaimov is proud to serve the residents of Brooklyn, Ridgewood, Middle Village, Woodside and Maspeth.

Dentist in Maspeth Took a Stand Against Sweets This Halloween

Maspeth Dentist Dr. Khaimov

During Halloween, Dr. Alexandria Khaimov, dentist in Maspeth, led an anti tooth-decay movement by giving away dollars in exchange for the excess candy collected from trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-treaters were invited to bring in their excess candy and Dr. Khaimov bought it for $1 for each pound brought. She collected close to 25 pounds of Halloween treats.

Dr. Khaimov is passionate about encouraging proper oral health among the children in her community.

“The kids still got to experience the fun of trick-or-treating, but with the added benefit of growing their piggy banks and sparing their teeth and gums unnecessary strain from all the candy,” says Dr. Alexandra Khaimov.

It is no secret that children around the world love candy. In fact, the global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2 percent each year, and by 2013, it had reached 50 million tons.

These figures only confirm the fact that parents have a more difficult task of ensuring their children’s teeth are well cared for. In addition to hurting their teeth, candy also leads to hyperactivity and weigh gain in children. Broken teeth and damaged braces are also common phenomena among young candy eaters.

This was the 3rd year in a row Dr. Khaimov organized a Halloween Candy Buy Back. This year, Facebook fans got an extra dollar for every pound of candy they brought by simply sharing Dr. Khaimov’s Halloween Candy Buy Back Facebook message.

Dr. Khaimov is ready to help with her next community event – a Holiday Coat Drive in which she encourages the members of her community to donate coats and jackets they no longer need. This is to help meet the demand for warm coats this winter.

Dr. Khaimov proudly serves the residents of Brooklyn, Ridgewood, Middle Village, Woodside and Maspeth.
